Om Mala (Dark Brown)
Om Mala (Dark Brown)
Malas, or prayer beads, are an essential meditation tool that practitioners wear around their neck or wrist to count mantra recitations. Mantras are sacred syllables or phrases recited as part of Buddhist practice to cultivate compassion and wisdom and connect with enlightened body, speech, and mind.
Each mala features 108 beads for counting, and one guru bead, symbolizing the relationship between student and spiritual teacher and signifying the end of one round of recitations.
This dark brown imitation bone mala features the sacred syllable Om and was blessed by Tibetan Buddhist nuns at the Dolma Ling Nunnery in India. Om precedes many Buddhist mantras–the most well-known mantra in Tibetan Buddhism is Om Mani Padme Hung, the mantra for the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara.
While traditionally made from yak or cow bone, this mala features eco-friendly imitation bone that disintegrates over time. This imitation bone mala can serve as a reminder of impermanence and of the precious opportunity to practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use a mala?
Malas are traditionally held in the left hand when counting recitations. Begin by holding the bead next to the guru bead between your thumb and index finger; after each recitation, move to the next bead, eventually working around the length of the mala until you reach the guru bead again. Once you reach the guru bead, reverse course. If you practice within a particular lineage, follow your teacher’s instructions
Do I have to be a Buddhist to wear a mala?
No! Malas can be worn by anyone, but as spiritual objects, they should be treated with respect. Treat your mala with care and prevent it from dropping to or touching the ground.
Who made this mala?
Sourced from the Tibetan Nuns Project, the nuns source the beads from Indian and Tibetan vendors, then string together the beads by hand. After which, the beads are blessed by the nuns.
